History

In 1981, a group of volunteers recognized the need for specialized end-of-life care in the greater Dubuque community and began work to develop a new nonprofit organization. Hospice of Dubuque was incorporated as a tax-exempt charitable corporation in 1982 under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Service code.

With a mission of providing compassionate care for the terminally ill and their loved ones, Hospice of Dubuque’s dedicated volunteers began serving the Dubuque County terminally ill and their caregivers in May of 1983. The first staff member was hired in 1987. Medicare and Medicaid certification were attained in 1990, at which time care by an interdisciplinary team was fully developed and additional staff members were hired. In response to the needs of the greater Dubuque community, Hospice of Dubuque became licensed to serve families in Illinois in 1995 and in Wisconsin in 1997.

Hospice of Dubuque is governed by a voluntary Board of Directors comprised of community members. Approximately 70 staff members and 120 volunteers currently serve clients in the tri-state area. According to national benchmark data, the care provided by Hospice of Dubuque exceeds both state and national levels.

Hospice Philosophy

Hospice affirms life and recognizes dying as a part of the process of living. Hospice exists to provide support and care for persons with a life-limiting diagnosis so that they may live as fully and comfortably as possible. Hospice neither hastens nor postpones death. Hospice exists in the hope and belief that through appropriate care and the promotion of a caring community sensitive to their needs, patients and their families will be helped through the process of dying and grieving.

Hospice of Dubuque's governing documents, conflict of interest policy, and financial statements are available upon written request to Jackie Brehm, Financial Director.
